An opportunity for discussion between institutions, experts and operators in the sector

Arbovirosis management requires a structured and ongoing strategy, capable of integrating monitoring, land control and larvicidal control plans. For Public Administrations, prevention remains the central pillar, but must be accompanied by clear operational protocols to intervene effectively in the event of cases of viral transmission and in the presence of an outbreak.

An often overlooked element is collaboration between public and private entities: dialogue between health authorities and citizens is essential to raise public awareness of risks and appropriate behavioral measures, thus reducing proliferation factors. Furthermore, climate change is expanding the range of mosquitoes in Italy, making their control more complex due to higher temperatures and intensifying extreme weather events.

The “Mosquitoes, Arbovirosis and Sustainability” meeting, aimed at central and local public administrations, will offer an overview of prevention and containment solutions and strategies, through the analysis of real cases and the most recent local experiences in combating mosquitoes.

Among the scheduled speeches, Marco Di Luca of the Department of Infectious Diseases, ISS and Florindo Micarelli of the Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority of Latina will speak.

The role of public administrations in combating mosquitoes

According to regional laws mayors have the possibility of issuing ordinances on hygiene and public health, these include municipal ordinances issued for the management of mosquito infestations and the control of diseases transmitted by these vectors.

Each municipality is therefore responsible for defining and implementing control actions within its territory and then issuing ordinances that clearly specify obligations, responsibilities, and best practices for both the administration and citizens. Proper local regulation is in fact a key element in ensuring effectiveness and continuity of interventions.

Why participate?

Mosquito control involves targeted interventions: larvicidal treatments in road drains and critical areas, starting in spring, are essential to contain the proliferation of Culicidae in the summer months. Adulticidal control is carried out when anti-larval control has not been sufficient, due to very large outbreaks, and infestation levels exceed the tolerance threshold, representing a danger to public health in the presence of confirmed cases of arbovirosis.

The increase in arboviroses such as West Nile, Dengue and Chikungunya in recent years therefore makes an integrated approach to mosquito control based on:

• entomological and health surveillance,
• planned and targeted larvicidal interventions,
• active participation of citizens.

Participating in the meeting will allow Public Administrations to:

• examine real and replicable case studies,
• explore methodologies and solutions for effective risk management,
• engage with pest control institutions, researchers, and professionals

With this event, we want to create a time for institutions, experts, and industry professionals to discuss the most common issues in mosquito control, such as strategies, intervention planning, operational methods, and monitoring infestation levels, as well as solutions for managing larval outbreaks and the topic of sustainability in pest control.
