The management of pest birds in urban, industrial, and rural environments represents one of the most complex challenges for the Pest Management sector due to the increasing adaptability of species such as pigeons, gulls, and starlings. The constant availability of food, urban heat, and numerous nesting sites promote continuous reproduction. Nests, located in gutters, roofs, and crevices, range from simple to more complex structures. This context requires effective, sustainable control strategies that comply with regulations, based on deterrence and environmental management.

Feral pigeon (Columba livia domestica)
Sedentary and gregarious species, most widespread in urban areas. Its diet is mainly granivorous, but it easily adapts to available resources, including waste.

Common starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
A small to medium-sized bird, recognizable by its black‑purple‑green plumage and yellow beak. Omnivorous, it feeds mainly on insects during the breeding season.

Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri)
This species is recognizable by its green plumage and black‑reddish collar. It is native to other geographic areas and it nests in cavities in trees and buildings.

Hooded crow (Corvus cornix)

Gulls (Laridae)
In more limited and localized contexts, the Italian sparrow (Passer italiae) and the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) are also recognized as pest bird species.
In natural ecosystems, bird populations are regulated by factors such as climate, the presence of predators, and the seasonal availability of food. In contrast, in urban and rural areas these natural balances are altered: the abundance of food resources and the reduction of predators favor the proliferation of pest bird species. In this context, synanthropic species such as pigeons, gulls, and starlings can reach very high densities, leading to problems related to public health, building deterioration, and urban sanitation management.

Fouling and building deterioration: bird droppings, rich in uric acid and sulfur compounds, are highly corrosive to building materials. Rain further disperses these residues, extending the damage to surrounding areas. Microcracks promote the accumulation of organic matter and the growth of algae, molds, and fungi, accelerating the degradation process.

Pecking: this consists of repeatedly pecking at calcium‑rich surfaces. Birds ingest small fragments that aid their digestive processes, but in more severe cases this repeated activity can weaken structures, causing the gradual disintegration of surface materials.

Noise pollution: large colonies, especially of starlings and gulls, generate high noise levels due to their constant calls. This phenomenon negatively affects urban quality of life, causing disturbance and discomfort for residents and businesses.

Zoonoses and parasite transmission: birds are direct or indirect carriers of around 60 diseases transmissible to humans and domestic animals, including salmonellosis, ornithosis, cryptococcosis, and histoplasmosis. In addition, pigeons in particular carry arthropods such as ticks, fleas, lice, and mites, which can enter homes and affect people, becoming vectors of further diseases.

Depredation and contamination of food supplies: birds near silos and food-processing industries cause damage and economic losses; they consume and contaminate food stocks, making them unsuitable for use and leading to their disposal.

Aircraft incidents: bird strikes—collisions between birds and aircraft—represent a serious risk to aviation safety. The presence of birds near airports can cause damage to engines, structures, and flight systems.
The uncontrolled growth of pest bird populations is now a concrete and increasingly widespread issue in urban, industrial, and agricultural contexts. Understanding the causes of their proliferation and the associated risks is essential for effective intervention. Only through integrated strategies for bird deterrence, prevention, and environmental management is it possible to reduce the impact of these species, safeguarding public health, structural safety, and the quality of life in our cities.
