How to keep weed birds away in the city and countryside

Managing birds in urban, industrial and rural settings is not an easy challenge for Pest Management. Species such as pigeons, gulls, starlings, and other birds have increasingly developed greater adaptability to human contexts. It is essential to adopt effective, environmentally friendly and regulatory-compliant solutions.

A look at the regulations

European and Italian regulations protect wild birds, allowing interventions only in motivated cases and through authorized control plans. Such interventions must exclude any violent or lethal method, also in compliance with animal abuse regulations, instead favoring environmentally friendly and safe solutions. This modifies the habitat and promotes the spontaneous movement of birds away to non-problematic areas, without causing harm to other species or the environment.

Guide to operational phases

No removal or deterrence system can be installed without a comprehensive inspection at different times of the day, to record the colony’s movements.

First, it is necessary to determine the pressure and presence of the birds, that is, the intensity of their activity and the potential impact on the affected area. Second, a structural and architectural analysis of the space needs to be conducted, so that appropriate adhesives or fastening systems can be chosen. Finally, the operator must conduct a logistical risk assessment.

Preliminary operations

Before placing any bollard, it is necessary to clean the contaminated place, a mandatory technical and legal prerequisite (Legislative Decree 81/08). The accumulation of guano, carcasses and nests poses a health and hygiene risk. Additionally, if traces of activity are not removed, pigeons will attempt to recolonize the area by bypassing or damaging installed systems.

The remediation involves the following phases:

  • Dust Removal: vacuum dust with professional vacuum cleaners.
  • Guano removal: guano, previously humidified with specific disinfectants, is removed with scrapers and shovels, stuffed into approved watertight containers, and disposed of as special waste in authorized facilities.
  • Final pest control: Treat surfaces with liquid pyrethroid-based insecticides (CYMINA PLUS, CYMINA ULTRA, FLYTRIN 6.14, STING) to eliminate any harmful arthropods. Where possible, it is advisable to use concentrated suspension or microencapsulated insecticides, so as to ensure greater persistence of the active ingredients and a longer-lasting action over time (BOMBEX FARUMY).

Optical gels

Pin bollards

Birdwire or dancing thread

Low visual impact system for linear surfaces exposed to medium-low pressure. It does not physically prevent contact, but creates an unstable and oscillating support surface, thanks to an elastic effect, which destabilizes the bird upon landing, causing it to move away.

Electrostatic system

Highly discreet, it is ideal for monuments, historic buildings and complex linear surfaces. It does not cause permanent physical damage to birds, but releases a high-voltage, low-amperage discharge upon contact, inducing an immediate receding reflex and discouraging return.

Barriers for photovoltaic systems

Nesting under panels can cause drops in energy efficiency, chemical-corrosive degradation from guano, and fire risks. To solve the problem, physical perimeter barriers can be installed that prevent access to the birds, while still ensuring ventilation of the panels.

Monitoring and verification

 

Volatile clearance systems require periodic checks, carried out by the specialized personnel who provided the installation, to ensure maximum efficiency, safety and durability over time. During monitoring activities, the tensioning of the networks is checked, electrical tests are performed on the electrostatic control units and the performance of the optical gels is evaluated. In parallel, it is essential to adopt structural and hygienic preventive measures to reduce the attractiveness of the environment. Proper waste management, sealing access to buildings and eliminating food sources help limit infestations and prevent the return of birds.
