The strategic role of Pro-Fume® in pest management in the food industry

An adequate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program requires the coordination of various actions, from monitoring to physical, biological and chemical control, in a management system aimed at preventing infestations.

Preventive and curative treatments in food companies

A correct risk analysis, continuous monitoring, and the adoption of appropriate control measures are essential to prevent pest populations from exceeding threshold levels, which could lead to product recalls, economic losses, unexpected production stoppages, and damage to brand reputation.

In summary, the key points for an integrated pest management approach are:

  • Design and prevention as a starting point, supported by staff training.
  • Pest Proofing, meaning physical and mechanical measures to prevent pests from entering and settling.
  • Pest Monitoring, to identify and classify control points (CPs) and manage significant hazards.
  • Pest Control, to be implemented when risk thresholds are exceeded, through:
    • Preventive measures, such as the use of beneficial insects (biological control).
    • Curative measures, through physical methods or biocides to eliminate pests

Case study: how we resolved the infestation in a mill

A mill with two different processing cycles (flour production and by‑products for animal feed) was experiencing an infestation of stored‑product moths (Plodia spp., Ephestia spp., and Cadra spp.) with constant threshold exceedances.

The corrective actions implemented by the service provider—consistent with the Risk Analysis—consisted of volumetric saturation using an insecticide synergized with piperonyl butoxide each time the threshold was exceeded.

In the absence of significant improvements, the pest control intervention was carried out with the technical support of the Colkim team, which proposed a change in strategy.

The following year, in the event of threshold exceedances, a treatment with a toxic gas based on sulfuryl fluoride was introduced as a corrective action to be included in the pest management plan, in addition to the use of mating disruption and the release of beneficial insects.

The collected data showed that the infesting population was completely eliminated, without any additional chemical treatments during the year, with only a minimal increase in infestation levels—consistently well below the risk threshold—thanks to the use of preventive biological control methods.

The solution: fumigation with Pro‑Fume®

Following threshold exceedances, the chemical control of pests of hygiene and sanitary concern involves treating areas with insecticidal products. However, these interventions do not act on the eggs, creating a risk of re‑infestation.

Therefore, fumigation treatments fully belong within an integrated pest management (IPM) and Pest Control program. Fumigation with Pro-Fume® plays an important role within the IPM “toolbox,” with over 15 years of proven experience in Italy and abroad.

A fumigation with Pro‑Fume® eliminates all pests present in the facility:

  • It restores the plant to a “zero state” with reduced downtime (12–36 hours depending on site characteristics and company objectives).
  • It reaches areas that are difficult or inaccessible for other methods (e.g., corners, cracks, and machinery).
  • It penetrates through food residues to effectively control insects.

Fumigation treatments can only be performed by professional operators who have documented training and authorization to use toxic gas, in accordance with the authorization requirements established by Royal Decree 09.01.1927 No. 147 and subsequent amendments, as well as the authorization under Articles 25 and 26 of Presidential Decree 23.04.2001 No. 290.
