Siliqua Pods: the silicone larvicide revolution

Siliqua is a larvicidal product for mosquito control, a silicone oil that eliminates mosquito larvae and pupae by acting in water exclusively for physical-mechanical action, with an effectiveness of up to 4 weeks.

Siliqua forms a thin film above the surface of still, stagnant water. The film formed by Siliqua prevents mosquito larvae from breathing atmospheric oxygen, because the larvae no longer adhere to the surface and begin moving quickly and haphazardly to clean the siphon and attempt to overcome Siliqua’s physical barrier.

Siliqua Pods is a ready-to-use silicone larvicide in water-soluble capsules for the control of mosquito larvae and pupae in major proliferation foci. With Siliqua Pods, we have developed a more practical format to facilitate the application of Siliqua silicone larvicide in manholes and public machicolations.

The capsule consists of a totally water soluble polymer that leaves no residue in the environment. Laboratory tests have established that the polymer used as packaging to coat Siliqua Pods capsules is biodegradable and compatible with the life of marine ecosystems.

Application of Siliqua Pods in manholes

Siliqua Pods does not require registration, because it is a non-biocidal, sustainable and biodegradable product, suitable for use on any type of fixed waterlogging.

The shape of the pods is designed to avoid product waste and fit comfortably inside machicolations and manholes. Siliqua Pods can also be placed in empty, dry manholes: the sachet will remain intact until the manhole fills with water.

Biodegradability Siliqua Pods

We performed a test to determine the biodegradability of the water-soluble polymer used as packaging to coat Siliqua Pods capsules. The test substance was exposed for 28 days to activated sludge from a domestic wastewater treatment plant. Biodegradation was measured by monitoring the oxygen consumption of the bacterial colony, under defined conditions, using a manometric method.

During the test, it was evaluated how much the substance can degrade naturally thanks to the action of microorganisms. After the first 10 days, the biodegradation level reached approximately 47%, while after 28 days it reached approximately 69%. Based on the overall results, the substance was therefore considered biodegradable. Furthermore, evidence has shown that the substance is not toxic to microorganisms, exerting no inhibitory effect on them.
