The adults of Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Pine Processionary Moth) are nocturnal butterflies with a very short lifespan (one to two days) and are active during the summer, from May/June to September, depending on environmental conditions.
Male specimens typically emerge from their shelters earlier than females. After a period of inactivity, females attract mates using a specific pheromone. Following mating, the female lays between 100 and 300 eggs along pine needles, covering them with scales taken from her own abdomen.

To combat this pest during the summer and prevent females from laying eggs, Colkim has introduced a pheromone trap specifically designed to capture adult Pine Processionary Moths, the Flysan®. This trap is installed during the insect’s flight period and is “activated” with a specific female sexual pheromone that attracts males.

Designed to be hung on pine trees, Flysan® is made of a special plastic material that resists abrasion against tree bark. The number of traps to be placed depends on the area to be monitored, ranging from 1-2 to 4-5 per hectare.
Flysan® provides effective control of the Pine Processionary Moth without the use of insecticides.
