What is Popillia japonica and Why It’s a Threat

The Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) is an invasive insect rapidly spreading in parts of northern Italy, causing significant damage to agricultural crops, lawns, and green areas. Adults emerge in late spring, with peak activity in June and July.

Managing this pest is currently one of the major challenges for crop protection and environmental preservation.

According to the Regional Phytosanitary Service of Lombardy, severe defoliation has been observed on fruit trees (especially Prunus avium, cherry), grapevines, as well as ornamental trees and shrubs.

The Event: Research and Management Strategies for Popillia japonica

The event will bring together researchers, technicians, and industry professionals to address three key topics:

• The spread of Popillia japonica in Europe and Italy, with a focus on the most affected regions;
• Research and technological innovations for monitoring and controlling the insect;
• Integrated management strategies with attention to environmental sustainability.

• David W. Held (Auburn University, USA) – Plenary lecture on research developments and management perspectives for Popillia japonica.
• Giselher Grabenweger (Agroscope, Switzerland) – Presentation of results from the European H2020 IPM-Popillia project.
